Management Team
 

Emil Van Essen

President, Systems & Asset Management. One of VanKar's founding fathers, Mr. Van Essen now heads the firm's Systems and Asset Management Division. In this capacity, he is responsible for analysis, implementation and maintenance of all systems applications undertaken for client accounts. He also coordinates the firm's Managed Futures efforts, working closely with clients to review and select one or more professional advisors to manage portions of an integrated portfolio. A registered Commodity Trading Advisor, he also manages several trading programs.

Prior to founding VanKar, Mr. Van Essen was the Director of Quantitative Futures Analysis for REFCO Global, Ltd., LLC in Chicago. Prior to this he was the Director of Managed Futures for the Bank of Montreal where he pioneered the bank'managed futures program. He has also acted as a consultant to a large international managed futures fund. He began his career as a commodities broker for Prudential-Bache Securities. Mr. Van Essen is also the author of several books and numerous articles on the benefits of incorporating futures into a managed portfolio, and has conducted extensive independent computer research on trading models and systems.


John Karvelas

President, Brokerage & Trading. Also a founding father of the firm, Mr. Karvelas brings a wealth of knowledge on the intricacies of futures trading and futures brokerage. He leads the firm's Brokerage and Trading efforts and has developed key customer relationships all over the world. He has over 15 years experience in the futures industry including work in commercial trading, arbitrage, pit trading and retail and institutional brokerage.


Bryan Kiernan

Vice President; Business and Strategy Development. Mr. Kiernan brings five years of experience within the derivatives trading industry. Prior to working with VanKar Trading Corp. Mr. Kiernan has worked with Fortune Global 500 firms such as Allianz Asset Management GmbH in Munich and Bank One Capital Markets in Chicago. Mr. Kiernan brings his expertise in the areas of International Business, IT, BPM, and Finance in order to help further develop VanKar Trading Corps presence as a world leader in derivatives trading technology and services. Mr. Kiernan is a graduate of the Kelley School of Business with majors in Finance and International Business in addition to study at the European School of Business Hochschule Reutlingen.


Julian Mulla

Chief Technology Officer, joined VanKar Trading in 2008 with fifteen years of experience in software development and IT. Prior to joining VanKar he was the Director of the IT Department at the National Commercial Bank of Albania and Adjunct Professor at the University of Tirana, Department of Computer Sciences. He has also held senior development roles at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Mr. Mulla is making a substantial contribution in regards to the Quantitative Research that is the foundation of VanKar Trading's research and development efforts. Mr. Mulla has proven exceptional aptitude in mathematics dating back to 1989 when he won the gold medal of the Albanian Mathematical Olympiad and the Third Prize in the 8th Balcanic Mathematical Olympiad in Rumania. Currently his focus is in Financial Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Stochastic Calculus, PDE, Numerical Methods and Statistics.
